1. Don’t send your resume Saturday. Even Friday is risky. Monday is the best day when you want to up your chances of landing the job.
2. Don’t write about your quirky hobbies on your resume. How you love frying dodo or having sex should never make it to your resume.
3. Don’t mistake a recruiter as your career confidante. Keep your personal stuff to yourself.
4. Don’t repeat everything you said in your resume in your cover letter. Take yourself a niche higher. Advertise yourself.
5. Don’t dwell in negativity.
6. Don’t do every single thing your mentor advises. Listen to your guts once in a while. Follow your heart. You will make mistakes but that is fine.
7. Don’t stop trying. When you get laid off or don’t get the job. Mourn the loss and move on.
8. Don’t dwell on your certificate, dwell on your “Sabi –ticate” What you know will always be what hiring managers care about and definitely not where you went to university
9. Don’t neglect proofreading your resume before sending it. A badly written resume can be a major turnoff for prospective employers.
10. Don’t be overly concerned with a resume’s length. The story your resume tells about why you’re perfect for a position is more important.
11. Don’t be too salesy or pompous. Emphasize your solid qualifications and ability without trying too hard.
12. Don’t forget to bring your resume. Best be armed with copies of them, best work samples, a notepad and pen.
